What is Athena Family Medicine?

Athena Family Medicine is a family practice at 8301 Lakeview Pkwy, Suite 106, Rowlett, TX 75088. You can call 469-931-2602. Dr. Kevin Vo, MD, founded the practice in 2015 and serves as its medical director. He is board certified by the American Board of Family Medicine, has practiced family medicine since 2012, and speaks English and Vietnamese.

Most of the work is everyday primary care, including diabetes, thyroid conditions and blood pressure. The practice also runs two self-pay programs. The Medical Weight Loss program starts with a full exam, an EKG and labs, and Dr. Vo decides whether medication is right for you. The Testosterone Therapy program confirms a diagnosis with an exam and blood work, and injections are given in the office by clinical staff. The office is open Monday to Friday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, with a lunch closure from 12:00 to 1:00 pm.

What does it cost?

Weight loss visits are $165 for the first consultation and each yearly visit, $80 for each monthly review paid online, and $145 for an optional in-office visit that replaces that month's review. Testosterone consultations are $165 every 3 months, and each injection visit is $20, paid at the visit. Lab work is billed by the lab, and your medication is paid to your pharmacy, since the program fees do not include it. It does not publish prices for regular primary care visits.

Regular primary care is billed to insurance under a list of accepted plans. It does not accept Molina, Medicaid or Amerigroup, and coverage changes often, so call to confirm. Both programs are self-pay and are not billed to insurance.

If you cancel at least 24 hours before your appointment, your prepaid fee is refunded, minus Square's card processing fee. Later cancellations and missed visits lose the visit fee. The $80 monthly fee is not refunded once Dr. Vo has reviewed it.

What should you ask before you book?

Ask which medication Dr. Vo would prescribe, since the weight loss medication names are not published, and whether it is brand-name or compounded. Ask your pharmacy for the monthly cost, and ask the lab for its price before your first blood draw. Ask whether any visits can be done by video, because the program does not say. For testosterone, ask what happens if you miss a 3-month visit, since refills are not called in between visits.

Who is it a good fit for?

This is a good fit if you want a family doctor who also runs a self-pay weight loss or testosterone program, and you are comfortable paying a pharmacy and a lab separately. It is a weaker fit if you need the full monthly cost or video visits confirmed before you book.
