About Healthy Roots MD
What is Healthy Roots MD?
Healthy Roots MD is a physician-led family practice at 89-B Old Trolley Rd, Suite #209, in Summerville, South Carolina. Its main work is direct primary care, a membership in which patients pay a monthly fee to their doctor and no health insurance is billed. It also runs a medical weight loss program and offers lifestyle medicine. Dr. Asia McDonald is the prescriber. She is a board-certified family physician and has been board certified in obesity medicine (ABOM) since 2013.
The weight loss program is called WholeBody. It pairs physician visits with lifestyle coaching and medication support. The first visit includes a full history and physical, a nutrition and activity assessment, InBody body composition testing and metabolic labs. Appointments can be in person, by telehealth, by phone or by text. Hours are Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm, and Saturday, 9am to 1pm, all by appointment. Sunday is for urgent needs only. The practice has a 5-star rating from 11 Google reviews.
What does it cost?
Direct primary care is billed as a monthly membership, and Healthy Roots MD does not publish that membership fee. Ask for the number before you book.
WholeBody costs $200 a month, and a six-month enrollment is required. New members also pay a $50 enrollment fee, which is waived if you pay all six months up front, $1,200. The $200 does not include medication, and no medication prices are published. In its own words: "Medications are prescribed when appropriate. Cost of medication not included."
The 15-minute Meet & Greet is free. Payment is cash only, with no health insurance billed. The practice does not say whether it accepts HSA funds or offers financing, and it does not state cancellation terms.
What should you ask before you book?
Ask who writes and renews your prescription. Ask which medication the program uses, and whether it is a brand-name product or a compounded one. The practice describes its prescriptions as FDA-approved, so ask for the drug name and the monthly pharmacy cost.
Ask what follow-up lab work costs, since baseline labs are listed as included and later testing is not described. Ask what the direct primary care fee leaves out. The practice says STI testing is not covered by the membership fee.
Ask how cancellation works, and whether the $1,200 paid up front is refunded if you stop early. Ask whether HSA cards or financing are accepted.
Who is it a good fit for?
This is a good fit if you already pay cash for primary care and want a physician you can reach directly, and if you can commit to six months for the weight program and pay for medication on top of the monthly fee. If you need one all-in price, the published figures do not give one, so get the total in writing before you book.
