About The Healthy Human

What is The Healthy Human?

The Healthy Human is a direct primary care clinic, a family medicine practice that charges members a monthly fee instead of billing insurance for visits. It has offices in Blair and Ashland, Nebraska, and patients can book in-person visits or telehealth appointments. All visits are by appointment only. Amber Beckenhauer, DO, a board certified family physician and the founder, prescribes, and so does Sandy Henry, PA-C, a certified family medicine physician assistant. Dr. Beckenhauer has practiced medicine since 2008 and created The Healthy Human in 2018. Its Google listing shows a rating of 5 from 5 reviews.

Of the services a cash-paying patient might be looking for, hormone replacement therapy and integrative wellness sit under an advanced membership. The clinic also runs a nutrition and weight loss program with weekly or bi-weekly check-ins. For longevity, it describes a personalized wellness plan built around anti-aging and longevity goals, begun through a 12-week program. It does not offer peptide therapy, and it names no specific medications. Other listed services include allergy consultations, prenatal care and delivery, and aesthetic services through a separate arm, HH MedAesthetics.

This listing is for its Blair office at 1659 Washington St.

What does it cost?

Direct primary care membership is $119 a month for adults, and $59 a month for children and for college students aged 19 to 24 with a valid student ID. Hormone replacement and integrative wellness or weight memberships are $299 a month on the one-year plan or $549 a month on the six-month plan. Pay-per-visit care on that tier costs $349 to $399. The initial consultation is $299, and follow-up visits are $249 to $299. There is a one-time $100 enrollment fee.

In its own words: "Our services are considered a Cash-Pay model." The clinic does not bill insurance for visits, though it will submit some labs, imaging, specialist referrals and surgical options to insurance. It provides invoices for HSA or FSA use but no super bills. Membership fees are paid by automatic card or bank draft, and a failed payment adds $25. A missed appointment, or one cancelled less than four hours ahead, also costs $25. After-hours visits cost $110 to $199 on top of the monthly membership. The clinic does not say whether medication is included in the monthly price, and it gives no price for any weight loss medication.

What should you ask before you book?

Ask whether the $299 or $549 price includes medication, and what prescriptions cost either way. The clinic has an in-house pharmacy for members, but it does not say whether its drugs are brand-name or compounded, so ask that directly. Ask which plan you would be on. Memberships have no long-term contracts, yet the advanced plan lists a one-year price. Ask who writes your prescription and who handles follow-up. Ask what follow-up visits and lab work cost each month, since members get discounted labs and some tests can go through insurance. Ask what the weight management check-ins cost and how long the program runs. If you want peptide therapy, you will need to look elsewhere, because it is not offered here.

Who is it a good fit for?

This is a good fit if you want a family doctor on a flat monthly membership and you are ready to pay cash for hormone, weight or longevity care on top of it. It is a weaker fit if you need the monthly price to clearly cover medication, or if peptide therapy is the reason you are calling.
