What is High Plains Wellness?
High Plains Wellness is a weight loss and wellness practice with offices in Emporia and El Dorado, Kansas. Its main focus is weight loss, with wellness services alongside it. Dr. Charisse Symmonds, DO, founded the practice, is the only prescriber named, and the practice is rooted in internal medicine and primary care. After an initial assessment, the plan may be medical weight loss or lifestyle changes, depending on each person's needs and current health status.
The rest of the menu is broad. It includes body composition scans, Meals To-Go, a nutrition counter, an AlterG anti-gravity treadmill, an Emsella chair, IV hydration, energy and immunity injections, skin treatments, truBody, corporate wellness programs, and Zumba and private chef classes. Hormone therapy, peptide therapy and longevity medicine are not listed as services. The one hormone offering is a ticketed screening and Q&A called "Let's Talk Hormones," which is an event, not a treatment program. Telemedicine consults are available if you call to arrange one. The practice has a 4.4 Google rating from 16 reviews.
This listing is for its Emporia office at 1211 Stanton St.
What does it cost?
It does not publish a price for the weight loss program or a consultation fee. Care through your medical provider often needs only a standard office copay, typically $30 to $50 per visit, or your regular copay. Whether medication is included in that copay is not stated.
On insurance, the practice offers this in its own words: "We are proud to offer insurance based weight loss clinic along with other options that can be added on/cash pay options as well if needed."
The monthly membership includes the cost of your medications, ready for pickup on the 1st, 15th or 30th of the month. Office visits are not included, and no membership price is published. You can pay monthly, or pay in 6-month increments and receive one month free. Plans are subject to your FSA or HSA rules. Members also get one body composition scan a month, 50% off energy and immunity injections, and one free drink a month at the nutrition counter. Cancellation steps are shown in a video, and no written cancellation terms are published.
"Let's Talk Hormones" tickets cost $30 for general admission or $20 for healthcare workers. The price rises $5 on June 16.
What should you ask before you book?
Ask who signs the prescription for medical weight loss, and whether Dr. Symmonds is that prescriber. Ask which weight loss medications are used, and whether they are brand name or compounded. Ask whether medication is part of the per-visit copay or billed separately. Ask for the consultation fee, the program price, and what follow-up visits and lab work cost. If you use insurance, ask what your share per visit will be. If you pay in 6-month increments, ask what happens if you cancel partway through. Ask which states a telemedicine visit can be held from. Ask whether the listed weekday hours of 9am to 5pm and weekend visits by appointment apply at El Dorado, since that office's hours are not listed separately.
Who is it a good fit for?
This is a good fit if you want a physician-led weight loss program and you can manage either a per-visit copay or a monthly membership that includes medication. It is not the right fit if you are looking for hormone therapy, peptide therapy or longevity care, since none is offered as a service.
