About Catalyst

What is Catalyst?

Catalyst is a fitness business at 725 24th St. Ste. 103 in Ames, Iowa 50010, run by what it calls a brother-and-sister team. Fitness is the main business, with group classes, personal training and a supplement store. The medical side offers weight loss and medical consults, nutrition consults, nurse practitioner follow-up visits and blood work, either by telehealth or in person.

Its injections are B-12, Lipo-Mino Mix, MICC and Tri-Immune Boost. The only medication it names is Cyanocobalamin (B12), which is listed in MICC. It mentions nurse practitioner consults but does not name who prescribes, and it does not name a prescription weight loss drug. It does not publish hours. It is rated 5 on Google from 15 reviews.

What does it cost?

The consult prices are listed. An initial nurse practitioner consult is $99 for one hour. A nurse practitioner follow-up is $49 for 30 minutes, and a nutrition consult is $30 for 15 minutes. The initial weight loss consult goes toward the first month of a plan, as provider and client agree. It does not say whether a plan includes medication, and it publishes no prices for the injections or the plan itself. Blood work is priced by package, with no figures given.

Catalyst calls itself a cash-based practice. It accepts FSA and HSA cards for telehealth visits, but it does not say whether it takes any insurance beyond that or offers financing. Its pricing page also lists gym memberships starting at $99 a month. Those are fitness charges, not medical ones. The only cancellation language it publishes is for classes, and it reads: "I may be subjected to a fee."

What should you ask before you book?

Ask who signs the prescription, and get that person's name and credentials in writing before you pay. Ask whether the monthly fee includes the medication, and whether the drug is brand-name or compounded. Ask for the injection prices and the weight loss plan price, since neither is published. In its own words: "Prescription injections require an initial medical consultation to determine eligibility." Ask how to cancel a medical plan, how much notice is required, and whether a fee applies. Ask for office hours before you choose an in-person visit.

Who is it a good fit for?

This is a good fit if you want fitness classes and a cash-pay medical consult at one Ames address, and you are ready to ask who prescribes and what the medication costs before you commit. It is less suited to you if you need a named prescriber, published medical prices or insurance billing.

  • ✓Medical weight loss — listed on their site as “Initial weight loss consult price will be put toward first month of plan as mutually agreed upon by provider/client” source

We have not yet collected published prices or prescriber credentials for this clinic. When we do, they will appear here with a link to the page they came from — or a note saying the clinic publishes none, which is itself worth knowing. Call them for a price in the meantime.
