What is SDSM Weight and Wellness?
SDSM Weight and Wellness is a medically supervised weight loss clinic at 6699 Alvarado Road #2102, San Diego, CA 92120. It is the weight management branch of San Diego Sports Medicine & Family Health Center, which E. Lee Rice, DO, established in 1980. It has one Google review, rated 5.
Two prescribers are named. Courtney O'Bryan, DO, is board certified in Family Medicine and Sports Medicine and holds the MCSP credential. Monica Rivera-Gonzalez, FNP-BC, MSN, is the nurse practitioner. Jennifer Burns Katafigiotis, MS, is the certified weight loss nutritionist, and she is not named as a prescriber.
The clinic offers medical consultations, nutrition consultations with Jennifer, and medically prescribed meal replacements. The meal replacements are Numetra products, which you can also order through its online store. It does not name any weight loss medication.
What does it cost?
It does not publish a price for medical consultations or for any weight loss medication. Its one published program fee is $150 for weekly nutrition consultations with Jennifer. The fee is described both as every four weeks and as every four visits, so ask how often you would be charged. Those nutrition consultations are not billable to insurance.
Numetra meal replacements are listed at $19.00 each, including the Chocolate Pudding & Shake, Strawberry Smoothie, Caramel Cocoa Bar, and Maple and Brown Sugar Oatmeal with Fiber. The clinic asks that orders be placed before Wednesday at 9am to reduce a longer processing time.
It does not say whether medical consultations are billed to insurance. It does not publish a consultation fee, membership terms, or a cancellation policy.
What should you ask before you book?
Call (619) 229-3912 and ask which prescriber you would see and who signs any prescription. Ask whether the medication is included in the program fee, and whether it is a brand name product or a compounded one. Its 2023 blog post on compounded anti-obesity medications says, in its own words: "Patients should inquire about the source of the drug used in a compounded formulation." So ask where any ingredient comes from.
Ask what follow-up visits and lab work cost, whether medical consultations can be billed to insurance, and whether visits can be done by video. Ask how cancellation works and whether there is a membership or minimum commitment. If you plan to buy the Numetra products, ask whether an order needs a prescription and whether any of them are part of the program price.
Who is it a good fit for?
This is a good fit if you want physician-led weight care with nutrition consultations and meal replacements, and you are ready to pay out of pocket for care your insurance will not cover. If you need the medication and the full cost in writing before you book, get those answers first.
