What is Dermacare?
Dermacare is a physician-led med spa with five offices in San Diego and Orange County: Rancho Bernardo, Carlsbad, San Juan Capistrano, Encinitas and Mission Valley. Its main business is cosmetic care, including Botox, dermal fillers, laser and skin treatments, body contouring and plastic surgery. Weight loss injections are one of its services. The clinic dates its practice to 2006, and Google reviewers rate it 4.9 from 307 reviews.
Jeff Birchall, M.D., is the owner and medical director. Mark Schoemann, M.D., is also a listed physician, at the Encinitas office. The clinic does not name either of them as the prescriber for weight loss care specifically.
The clinic names semaglutide and tirzepatide as GLP-1 medications in its weight loss writing, but it does not say which one it prescribes. It has also described a program called DC Lifestyle, which pairs a personal health coach with a prepared-meal plan. That description is from a post dated March 22, 2015, so ask whether the program is still offered.
This listing is for its Carlsbad office at 6260 El Camino Real Ste 204.
What does it cost?
Dermacare does not publish prices for weight loss injections, and it does not say whether medication is included in any price. It also does not say whether it accepts insurance. The first visit is a complimentary consultation, which you can reserve online. The clinic lists financing options and a membership, but its weight loss information gives no terms for either. Ask for those terms in writing before you book.
What should you ask before you book?
Dermacare puts its candidacy standard this way: "Weight loss medication candidacy is considered based on several factors: BMI, health conditions, appetite suppression needs, non-invasive weight loss solution preferences, and more." Ask which of those factors counts most in your case, and who makes that decision.
Ask which physician will prescribe for you, and whether that physician evaluates you before a prescription is written. Ask whether the monthly fee includes the medication, and if it does, whether the drug is brand-name or compounded. Ask which GLP-1 medication you would start on and why.
Ask what follow-up visits and lab work cost, whether follow-up can be done by video, and how cancellation works on any membership or plan, including whether you pay for the rest of the month.
Who is it a good fit for?
This is a good fit if you want weight loss care in an office that also handles cosmetic treatments, and you are willing to get prices and medication details in writing before you book. It is a weaker fit if you need a clinic focused mainly on weight management, or if you need insurance billing, which the clinic does not address.
