About LeanMD

What is LeanMD?

LeanMD is a medical weight loss program that serves patients in California and beyond. It says its medications are prescribed and monitored by licensed physicians, but it does not name any of them. It does not show a street address or hours, and it has one Google review, rated 5.

The program runs in three phases: an active loss phase of 2 to 12 months, a transition phase of 3 to 5 weeks where appetite suppressant medication is tapered off, and a 12-month maintenance phase it calls the Sustainable Loss Membership Program. Its other listed services are RX appetite support, targeted supplements, B12 injections and virtual sustainability visits. The appetite support and B12 injections are optional. Semaglutide is the only specific drug it names, though it also mentions GLP-1 and GLP-1/GIP medications in general.

Virtual visits are part of the plan. One option alternates in-office visits with telephone visits and requires a LeanMD Wireless e-Scale so weight can be checked twice a month.

What does it cost?

LeanMD does not publish prices, and it does not state a consultation fee. It accepts credit cards, personal checks and cash. It says it does not bill or assist with billing insurance for the weight loss program.

It names a Monthly Pre-Paid Plan and a maintenance membership, but gives no price or cancellation terms for either. It does not say whether medication is included in the program cost. The e-Scale is not priced either. Ask for the full monthly figure, including medication, in writing before you agree to anything.

What should you ask before you book?

Ask who signs the prescription and whether that physician is licensed in the state where you live. LeanMD does not name a prescriber, and it does not list the states where telehealth is offered.

Ask whether the medication is brand-name or compounded. In its own words: "Compounded drug products are not FDA-approved." Its clinicians may prescribe compounded or FDA-approved generic medications, so ask which one you would receive and what each costs.

Ask what follow-up visits, lab work and the e-Scale cost, and how many in-office visits the pre-paid plan requires each month. Ask how you cancel the pre-paid plan or the membership, and whether any unused payment is refunded.

Who is it a good fit for?

This is a good fit if you are paying out of pocket, you want a physician-led plan that can be partly done by phone or video, and you are willing to get the full price, medication terms and cancellation rules in writing before you pay. If you need insurance to bill your care, or you want a clinic with a street address and posted hours you can visit, keep looking.

We have not yet collected published prices or prescriber credentials for this clinic. When we do, they will appear here with a link to the page they came from — or a note saying the clinic publishes none, which is itself worth knowing. Call them for a price in the meantime.
