What is Women's Health Center of West Virginia?
Women's Health Center of West Virginia, also called WHC WV, is a private, nonprofit reproductive health clinic at 510 W. Washington St. in Charleston, West Virginia 25302. It has provided reproductive health services since 1976, for patients of all incomes and ages. It offers annual exams, birth control, emergency contraception, HIV testing and PrEP, STI testing and treatment, breast and cervical cancer screening, and gender-affirming hormone therapy. It also runs a free harm reduction program with drop-in hours on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. It cannot distribute sterile syringes, because Charleston's City Council denied its syringe service program license in 2023.
For hormone care, the clinic describes it this way: "If you’re just starting gender affirming hormone therapy, you’ll begin with an initial visit." That first visit includes an intake, a conversation about personal goals and routine blood work. No referral is needed, and no letter from a mental health provider is required. It does not name the clinician who prescribes, and it does not say whether telehealth visits are offered.
What does it cost?
It does not publish prices or a consultation fee. It accepts most major insurance, including Medicaid, and lists Blue Cross Blue Shield, PEIA (UMR), Aetna and The Health Plan. To check whether your plan is accepted, call (304) 344-9834. Its gynecological services are offered on a sliding scale, and it does not publish how that scale works. It does not say whether hormone medication is included in any cost.
What should you ask before you book?
Ask who the prescriber is and whether that clinician will see you at each follow-up. Ask which hormone medications the clinic prescribes, and whether the medication is included in any cost or billed separately. Ask whether telehealth visits are offered. Ask what the labs and follow-up visits cost on your plan, and whether the sliding scale applies to hormone care. Confirm that your specific insurance is accepted before you book.
Who is it a good fit for?
This is a good fit if you want hormone therapy, STI testing or routine gynecologic care in Charleston and plan to use insurance or the sliding scale. If you were looking for a cash-pay package, it is worth a call first, since it does not publish prices.
