What is CHOICES Center for Reproductive Health?
CHOICES is a non-profit reproductive health clinic with offices in Memphis, Tennessee and Carbondale, Illinois. Its main work is reproductive care: abortion, birth control and midwifery. The clinic also lists LGBTQ+ health services, walk-in care, wellness exams, menopause symptom management, the HPV vaccine (Gardasil), HIV testing, PEP and PrEP, and gender-affirming hormone therapy.
Services differ by office. Abortion is offered in Carbondale only. In its own words: "Abortion services are not available in Memphis due to a law banning abortions entirely in the state of Tennessee." Medication abortion, which uses mifepristone followed by misoprostol, is available up to 12 weeks. Telehealth medication abortion is open only to Illinois residents, who must be in Illinois during the appointment, and medications ship only to Illinois addresses. The clinic names four prescribers: Nikia Grayson, Talita Oseguera, Kiara Norman, and Akaninyene “Kani” Ruffin. No credentials are given for any of them, and the clinic does not say which one provides hormone therapy. The phone number is 901-274-3550 in Memphis and 618-300-6017 in Carbondale.
What does it cost?
The clinic publishes out-of-pocket prices for abortion care in Carbondale: $550 for medication abortion up to 12 weeks, and $700 to $900 for procedural abortion up to 14 weeks and 6 days. Each includes lab work, an ultrasound, patient education and medications before, during and after the procedure. These prices apply only when paid at the time of service, and they do not apply when insurance is used. The clinic accepts insurance, including TennCare and Blue Cross Blue Shield in Memphis. It takes money orders and debit or credit cards, and cash only in Carbondale. In its own words: "Most CHOICES patients qualify for financial assistance." It does not publish prices for hormone therapy, and it does not say whether the medication is included in any price.
What should you ask before you book?
Ask which office and which prescriber handles hormone therapy, and what credentials that person holds, since none are stated. Ask whether a hormone therapy price includes the medication, which medication is prescribed, and whether it is brand-name or compounded. Ask what follow-up visits and lab work cost, whether your insurance covers hormone therapy visits, and how the Patient Discount Fund applies. Ask how to cancel or change an appointment, and whether any membership or monthly fee applies.
Who is it a good fit for?
This is a good fit if you live near Memphis or Carbondale, want abortion care, birth control or midwifery alongside hormone therapy, and are ready to get the hormone therapy price and prescriber details before you book. It may not fit if you need a published price for hormone therapy before you commit, since none is listed.
