About LowCountry Women's Specialists

What is LowCountry Women's Specialists?

LowCountry Women's Specialists is an OB/GYN practice. Its main work is women's gynecologic care, pregnancy care and birth control. Eight physicians are listed on its site: Dr. Martha Cohen, Dr. Alicia Farris, Dr. Ron Givens, Dr. Jennifer Heinemann, Dr. Christine Hunter, Dr. William "Bo" Reeves, Dr. Miles Reeves and Dr. Hunter Smith. It does not list credentials beside their names.

Its listed services are gynecology, pregnancy care, birth control and 3D and 4D ultrasound. Pregnancy care covers prenatal visits, high-risk pregnancy management, delivery and a postpartum evaluation, with prenatal labs and routine ultrasounds done in the office. Birth control options include pills, patches, IUDs, injections and implants, and it offers out-of-office sterilization. Its gynecology pages also describe in-office procedures and robotic surgery, and it is scheduling in-office screening mammography for established patients.

Hormone therapy is not one of its listed services. A 2019 article on its site covers menopause and hormone replacement. In its own words: "If the symptoms of menopause are interfering with your daily life, the physicians at Lowcountry Women’s Specialists can help determine if the benefits of hormone replacement or other therapies are the best option for you."

What does it cost?

It does not publish prices, a consultation fee, membership terms or a cancellation policy. It names one insurance carrier: BCBS State, which it says is now covering annual yearly visits for its insured. It does not say whether it bills other plans, so ask. Ask the office you plan to visit what a first visit costs.

What should you ask before you book?

Ask whether it prescribes hormone therapy and, if so, which of its physicians does. Its 2019 article describes bio-identical hormones made by a compounding pharmacist, and it notes that many insurance plans cover that type of therapy only in limited ways. So ask whether any product you would be offered is brand-name or compounded, and what your plan covers.

Ask what labs, follow-up visits and procedures cost, not only the first visit. Ask whether telehealth visits are available, since it does not say. Finally, ask who writes your prescriptions and whether that is the physician who will see you.

Who is it a good fit for?

This is a good fit if you need gynecology, pregnancy care or birth control from a practice whose main work is those services. If you are looking for hormone therapy, a weight loss program or peptide care, call first and ask whether hormone therapy is offered here, because none of those four services are on its service list.
