About The Carolina Center for Integrative Medicine

What is The Carolina Center for Integrative Medicine?

The Carolina Center for Integrative Medicine is an integrative medicine practice with offices in Raleigh and Wilmington, North Carolina. It was founded in 1994 by John C. Pittman, M.D., who serves as medical director and is the only named prescriber. Its own tagline calls it a North Carolina Lyme and Tick-Borne Disease Specialists practice, and it says it has treated complex medical conditions since 1994.

The main work here is chronic and complex illness. The services include testing, treatments, IV nutrient therapy, colon hydrotherapy, toxic metal removal and chelation therapy, immunoglobulin therapy, lymphatic massage, nutritional detoxification with assisted modified fasting, complementary cancer care, and hormone replacement therapy. Hormone care is one service among these, not the center of the practice. Registered nurses give the IV infusions. Its Google listing shows a 4.3 rating from 16 reviews.

On hormones, it says in its own words: "We offer pharmaceutical-grade bio-identical hormones, dispensed through a compounding pharmacy."

What does it cost?

The clinic does not publish prices for hormone therapy, medication, or a consultation. It does not say whether the medication is included in any price, or whether it accepts insurance. One patient review says Blue Cross Blue Shield covered only bloodwork for that patient, and calls the care expensive. The one written term is a cancellation rule: at least 14 days' notice to cancel an office visit. If you want numbers before you book, call (919) 571-4391 and ask for the consultation fee and the full cost of hormone care, including the medication.

What should you ask before you book?

Ask whether Dr. Pittman is the one who writes and signs your hormone prescription, or whether another clinician handles follow-up. Ask whether a consultation fee is charged, and whether it is due before any testing. Ask whether any quoted price includes the hormones. If it does not, ask which compounding pharmacy fills the prescription and what it charges you directly. Ask what blood and hormone testing costs before treatment starts, and how often levels are rechecked after that. Ask whether the 14-day cancellation rule covers follow-up visits, lab orders and infusions, or only office visits. Ask whether the clinic bills your insurer for any part of your care, and whether telehealth visits are offered, since the clinic does not say.

Who is it a good fit for?

This is a good fit if you want hormone care inside a wider integrative practice that also offers testing and other services, and you are prepared to pay out of pocket once you have a price in writing. If you need a hormone program with published fees and a stated medication price, this clinic does not show those yet, so get them in writing before you commit.
