About Prairieland Wellness Center

What is Prairieland Wellness Center?

Prairieland Wellness Center is a cash-pay hormone practice at 715 W. Broadway Street in Gillespie, Illinois, inside the Gillespie Family Practice Center building. Most of what it offers is testosterone pellet therapy. The pellets are small solid cylinders placed just under the skin of the upper buttocks in an office procedure done under local anesthesia. The practice treats men and women. Its listed services are bioidentical hormone replacement therapy, the bioidentical testosterone pellet, a pellet insertion kit, and a procedure fee. It does not list weight loss, peptide or longevity services.

Bruce Weber M.D. is the medical director and a prescriber. He is board-certified in family medicine, holds additional certification in geriatric medicine, and began treating patients with bioidentical hormones in 2009. Jason Manthei P.A.-C is the other listed prescriber. Jennifer Swan, M.P.H., is director of wellness and is not listed as a prescriber.

What does it cost?

It does not accept insurance for any service. Payment is due in full at the visit by cash, check, or credit or debit card. Visa, Mastercard, Discover and American Express are accepted, with a 3% processing fee on card payments. HSA and FSA cards are listed as accepted.

The initial consultation is $150, charged once at the first visit to review labs and medical history and decide whether pellet therapy is a fit. Each pellet insertion visit carries a $225 procedure fee, a $60 insertion kit, and a pellet fee that is listed as variable at $24 to $32 each for men.

It does not say whether the pellet fee includes the medication. It does not publish a total for a course of treatment, and it does not state what lab work, follow-up visits or cancellation cost. Some insurers reimburse pellet therapy, but most, including Medicare, do not cover it, and the patient files any insurance claim.

What should you ask before you book?

Ask who writes the prescription and who you will see at each visit. Ask whether the pellet fee includes the testosterone itself. Ask whether the pellet is a brand-name product or compounded by a pharmacy.

Ask for the total cost of a typical course, including the consultation, lab work, every insertion visit and any follow-up. The office may order new labs if your recent results are missing, and it asks that you use a lab your insurance covers, so ask how those tests will be billed.

Ask whether follow-up can be done by telehealth, since the practice does not address it. Finally, ask how cancellations and refunds work, since it does not say.

Who is it a good fit for?

This is a good fit if you want pellet-based hormone therapy, can pay in cash or with an HSA or FSA card, and can get to Gillespie for in-person visits during Monday through Thursday office hours or by appointment. If you are looking for weight loss, peptide or longevity care, this practice does not list those services.
