What is BioFit Medical Group?

BioFit Medical Group is a cash-pay hormone replacement clinic for men at 1751 N. Sunrise Way, Suite E, in Palm Springs, California. It has treated men since 2005. Jeffrey S. Dunham, M.D., Ph.D., is the medical director and the only prescriber named. Its Google listing shows a 5 rating from 3 reviews.

It offers a testosterone and human growth hormone screen and three programs. Bronze centers on testosterone. Silver adds human growth hormone and a body composition test. Gold adds thyroid hormone and an assessment of risk factors for heart disease, cancer and adult-onset diabetes. It treats men only and does not offer a weight loss program.

In its own words: "The first step for new patients is to measure their testosterone and human growth hormone blood levels to determine their eligibility for treatment." Patients come from across the country and abroad, but the doctor needs to see them in person a few times a year. Hours are Monday through Friday, 9am to 6pm, with Saturdays by appointment. What does it cost?

It does not publish a consultation fee. The screens cost $59 for testosterone, $89 for growth hormone or $139 for both. Bronze's initial exam is $550, with testosterone at $40 a month and an average monthly cost as low as $160 in the first year and $100 after. Silver's initial exam is $1000, and its average monthly cost is as low as $955 in the first year. Gold's initial exam is $1379, with an average monthly cost as low as $1090 in the first year. Human growth hormone is $700 and up a month, and thyroid hormone is $20 a month. These figures are estimates that depend on the physician's assessment, and patients pay exams in full at each visit.

It does not accept insurance, but it will provide a properly coded medical bill on request for reimbursement. It does not say whether the program figures include the medication, since prescriptions are listed separately. It does not publish a cancellation policy. What should you ask before you book?

Ask whether the monthly figure includes the medication, and if not, what each prescription costs. Ask whether the testosterone or growth hormone is brand-name or compounded, and which pharmacy fills it. Ask whether the initial exam fee covers the consultation, since no separate fee is given.

Ask who writes each prescription and how often you would see the doctor in person. Ask whether any follow-up can be done by video or phone, which it does not say. Ask what the 30-day, four-month and seven-month checkups cost on your program, and what the visits every six months cost after the first year.

If you live out of town, ask which labs can be drawn near home and whether they are covered. Ask for the cancellation terms in writing before you pay.

Who is it a good fit for?

This is a good fit if you are a man who wants cash-pay hormone replacement from a clinic that has treated men since 2005, you can keep in-person visits in Palm Springs or plan a few trips a year, and you are ready to commit to at least 12 months. It does not treat women, and it will not suit anyone who needs insurance to pay the cost. It is worth calling once you have written answers to the questions above.
