About MedHelp

What is MedHelp?

MedHelp is a family medicine and urgent care practice in Birmingham, Alabama, founded in 1982. It has five locations in the Birmingham metro area, including offices in Pelham and Trussville. Its hormone and age management program is offered at the Highway 280 clinic in Birmingham.

Dr. Larisa Russell, MD, is the physician named for that program. The clinic describes her as board-certified in family medicine, as well as anti-aging and regenerative medicine. Walk-in urgent care and primary care make up most of the practice. Its other services include telehealth, gynecology, mammogram, dermatology and aesthetic services, sports medicine, Long COVID care, Lyme disease treatment, and Wellness Therapies. Telehealth visits run 8am to 4pm, Monday through Saturday.

The age management path has four steps. You get initial lab work first. Once results come back, you are contacted to schedule a consultation with Dr. Russell. Then comes a full office visit, followed by a follow-up visit in 3 to 6 months. The clinic's blog also has a weight loss injection article naming semaglutide, Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro and Saxenda. The clinic does not say whether it prescribes those injections.

This listing is for its Birmingham office at 4600 Hwy 280 S..

What does it cost?

It does not publish prices for BHRT, age management or consultations, so there is no figure to compare. It does not say whether hormone medication or pellets are included in any price. It also does not state a consultation fee for age management. It does not describe membership terms, financing or cancellation.

On insurance, MedHelp accepts most forms of insurance. In its own words: "We accept most forms of insurance and are happy to file your claim for you." It does not say whether that covers BHRT visits or the lab work. Those two costs will shape what you pay, so ask about both before you book.

What should you ask before you book?

Ask who signs the hormone prescription and who follows up after the 3 to 6 month visit. Ask whether the hormones are pellets, creams, patches or oral medication, and whether any of them are compounded. The clinic's own writing mentions compounded creams, patches and oral medications, so ask which pharmacy fills them. MedHelp Rx pharmacies at Highway 280 and Lakeshore are one option.

Ask for the full cost of the initial labs, the consultation and each follow-up visit. Ask whether the price includes the medication. Ask whether insurance covers any BHRT visits or labs. If you are considering weight loss injections or peptide care, ask who prescribes them, because the clinic does not name a prescriber for either. Finally, ask how you cancel or stop treatment and whether any fee applies.

Who is it a good fit for?

This is a good fit if you want hormone and age management care from a physician who lists family medicine and anti-aging training, and you also want one practice for everyday urgent or primary care. It is a weaker fit if you need published prices or a named prescriber for weight loss or peptide care before you commit.
