About Marshfield Clinic

What is Marshfield Clinic?

Marshfield Clinic is an integrated health system serving Wisconsin and Michigan's Upper Peninsula. It describes more than 12,000 employees, including more than 1,600 providers across over 170 specialties. Its weight services sit inside that wider system, and they are mostly dietitian-led, education and behavioral programs. Its weight management program for adults is offered in the Eau Claire and Rice Lake region. A team there includes a registered dietitian, a fitness specialist and a provider who specializes in weight loss. The program is described as covering a personal nutrition and weight loss plan, appointments and long-term support.

Other weight-related services include a diabetes prevention program led by certified lifestyle coaches in virtual sessions, DIET FREE, nutrition services with registered dietitian nutritionists, physical therapy, a psychology of weight management program, a phone coaching program for Security Health Plan members, a pediatric lifestyle management clinic and bariatric surgery. Virtual (telehealth) and in-person visits are available for its diabetes self-management education. In its own words: "Talk to your primary care provider if one of the options below interests you."

It does not name a prescriber for the weight management program, and it does not say the program is physician-supervised. It names no weight loss medication. It does not list hormone therapy, peptide therapy or longevity medicine.

What does it cost?

It does not publish prices for the weight management program, the diabetes prevention program or nutrition services. The one price on the weight pages is for the DIET FREE participant kit: $99 plus shipping, which is $5.95 for economy or $10.95 for priority. DIET FREE is open to all patients and employees of Marshfield Clinic Health System, and children ages 10 through 18 can join when they attend with a parent or legal guardian.

It does not say whether the weight management program is billed to insurance or paid in cash. The Medicare weight therapy listed on the page requires a referral from a primary care provider, and the Security Health Plan coaching is limited to plan members.

What should you ask before you book?

Ask who writes any prescription and whether a physician supervises the weight management program. It does not say, so the question is worth asking directly. Ask whether any medication is part of the program, and if so, which one and whether it is brand-name or compounded.

Ask whether it bills insurance, and what the intake visit, follow-up visits, and any lab work cost. Ask whether the program is billed monthly or per visit, and how cancellation works. Ask which location you would attend, since the weight program covers the Eau Claire and Rice Lake region and it does not publish an address for that program.

Who is it a good fit for?

This is a good fit if you want dietitian-led, behavioral or group support, you live near Eau Claire or Rice Lake, or you already receive care from Marshfield Clinic, and you do not need a physician-supervised prescription weight plan. It is worth a call if you are a Marshfield Clinic patient and want to ask about DIET FREE or the diabetes prevention program. If you are looking for medication-based weight loss or hormone, peptide or longevity care, this practice does not appear to offer those services.
