About Summit Health

What is Summit Health?

Summit Health is a multispecialty outpatient system with more than 120 offices across New Jersey, New York and Connecticut. Its headquarters is in Berkeley Heights, NJ, and its main number is 908-273-4300. Most of its work is primary care and specialty medicine, from orthopedics and gastroenterology to women's health and urgent care.

Weight management is one of its services, and it is offered in one region only. In its own words: "Our Weight Management program is only offered in our Westchester, New York region." The New Jersey weight management program is no longer active. The team includes behaviorists, registered dietitians and physicians trained in Obesity Medicine. Related services include the Healthy Measures Program, bariatric (weight loss) surgery, pediatric weight management and body contouring after massive weight loss. It does not list hormone therapy or peptide therapy.

What does it cost?

It does not publish prices for any service, including the weight management program. It does not publish a consultation fee, a monthly fee, membership terms or a cancellation policy. Whether any fee includes medication is unclear, because it does not name a weight loss medication.

It does not say whether the weight management program bills insurance. It links to a list of accepted insurances and to a notice about the right to a good faith estimate, so ask for an estimate in writing before you book.

What should you ask before you book?

Start with who prescribes. It does not name a prescriber for the weight management program, so ask who writes any prescription and what that person's credentials are. Then ask which weight loss medications, if any, the program uses, and whether they are brand-name or compounded.

Next, ask what the program costs in full. Does the fee include medication? What do follow-up visits and lab work cost? Ask whether it bills insurance for this program, and what a visit costs if it does not.

Ask whether any part of the program can be done by video. It links to a guide for preparing for a telemedicine visit, but it does not say whether weight care is offered that way. Finally, ask how to cancel and whether any membership term applies. If you live in New Jersey, ask whether any weight program is available near you, since the New Jersey program is no longer active.

Who is it a good fit for?

This is a good fit if you live in or near Westchester, New York, want a weight program run by a dietitian and physician team inside a large multispecialty system, and can get the prescriber, medication and price confirmed in writing before you book. It is not the place to start for weight care in New Jersey, and it does not list hormone or peptide therapy.
